Situation

When we first started working with Demodia, they were struggling with the typical growing pains of a small business. They employed a remote team of 6-8 specialists dealing with a diverse workload, and reached a sustainable 7-figure revenue number, but things had stalled.

The business owner was spending a third of his time working with customers, another third working on sales, and the final third just keeping staff organised and everything aligned. He was tired and the original enthusiasm that had driven him when building the company was fading fast

Visibility & Accountability

Compass worked with the Demodia team to bring in some different ideas and promoted an operating system for the business that encouraged visibility and accountability.

Our initial recommendation was for Demodia to clarify and focus on their Vision and Core Purpose. This was something the owner believed was already in place, but as we dug into the topic it seemed like almost everyone in the company had a different idea of what Demodia did and what they were trying to achieve 

Management by Issues

Honest feedback from a team within a business can be really difficult to obtain, everything is going well, until suddenly everything is dire. This was the reality Demodia’s owner was experiencing. While the team were trying to shield him from some realities in the hope that they can fix issues themselves.

To help overcome this, Compass suggested the implementation of a "management by issues" approach to running the business, identifying problem, agreeing priorities and working together to find and implement solutions. This approach gave everyone in the team an open and non-judgemental space in order to raise and resolve issues - anything from the coffee machine needing a service, to struggling customer projects.

Driving in the Same Direction

The changes Demodia implemented have given their whole team a way to identify, track and resolve niggling issues before they become real problems. They have a shared direction that everyone is now driving toward, visibility of the speed they are going through a suite of metrics and, most importantly for Demodia’s owner a system that can make his workdays more enjoyable again.
